Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve

Wire grass under longleaf pine treesWeymouth Woods is one of the "natural areas" in the North Carolina state parks system. This park protects a remnant of the longleaf pine forest or "pine barrens" as the forests were called. These forests are not "barren". The forest supports a varied plant community adapted to periodic burning and many species of birds, amphibians and mammals. Park staff run an active education program and manage a natural history museum.

Short trails take you by active colonies of red-cockaded woodpeckers, through upland bogs, and by streams and areas affected by beaver ponds.

The Sandhills Natural History Society (SNHS) holds many of its monthly evening meetings at the visitor center.
